Aberchirder & District
Community Association

The Association was formed in 1996 following a meeting called by Aberchirder & Marnoch Community Council
to press Aberdeenshire Council to carry out improvements to football facilities at McRobert Park.  A committee was formed to build a community pavilion, and in order to make fundraising easier, the group became a community association with charitable status.  Around this time an experimental community economic development group, Villages In Control, held meetings to encourage local people to draw up a Community Plan for improvements they wanted.  The pavilion project now became part of this plan which included environmental improvements and signage.  The original £16,000 raised locally eventually attracted match funding of over £100,000 from Europe, the Lottery and Aberdeenshire Council.

The Association acts as an umbrella for, and tries to foster a spirit of cooperation among, local groups, and this is most obvious in June when the annual Gala is held.

The Members are:

Chairman – Bob Peden
Vice-Chairman – Davie Chalmers
Secretary – Linda Farquhar
Treasurer – Brian King

Committee:
Jonny Barton; Kenny Benzie; Les Chalmers; Stephen Forrest; Donald Graham; Adrian Inglis; Jayne Michie; Debbie Ray; Jan  Skyner; Linda Wann.

More volunteers are still needed, not necessarily to attend meetings but to help with activities.

For several years the Community Council provided financial help in buying and paying the running costs of the Christmas lights which Association volunteers put up each year.

In 2000 the Association produced a video of Aberchirder past and present –
'Aye Foggieloan' - in partnership with the Local History Group, which obtained a Lottery 'Awards For All' grant to finance its production.  It has so far sold almost 500 copies.  Other publications have included walks booklets featuring the history of the village and Cleanhill Wood, and calendars showing views of Foggie old and new.  A range of souvenirs, from mugs and teaspoons to personalised postage stamps, has also helped to publicise Aberchirder.  This community website is a major project which aims to make Foggie and its history known around the world
.

The Association’s main project activities today involve helping to manage the community woodland at Cleanhill, and developing the website.

Below are pictures showing some of the differences the Association has made to Aberchirder’s facilities and image.
