THE PARISH OF MARNOCH

River Deveron at Bridge of Marnoch

The parish takes its name from St Marnan, a Celtic missionary who, in the early 7th Century, established a base on the banks of the River Deveron near what is now Bridge of Marnoch.

Since then, there has always been a church, the most recent (not including those within the Burgh of Aberchirder) having been built on Cairnhill in 1792.

Parish Map

For over 1000 years life in the parish was based purely on farming.

There were no villages as such, just small 'ferm touns' – a few cottages surrounded by land cultivated by the tenants of the various landowners.
