This rare
souvenir cup includes a moustache guard and is inscribed "A Present from
Aberchirder".
The stamp on the bottom shows it was made in Germany.
Jane Thom (nee Allan) was born in the Marnoch area in 1872. As a young girl she was employed as a Pantry Maid by the Lyon family of Backhill of Culbirnie, Hilton, by Banff. In 1886, at the age of 14, Jane gave her employer, George Lyon, the above moustache cup as a gift. The occasion is unknown. When George Lyon's son (George Jnr) died, his niece Betty Davidson knew the story of the cup and she gave it back to Jane's son William Thom. William Thom was the father of Lorraine Jane Taylor, the contributor of this item and its history.
The name Jane has always been in the family and the cup will continue to be handed down to future generations.
